A new pneumococcal vaccine, Capvaxive®, has been introduced under the National Immunisation Program from the 1st of July 2026. Capvaxive protects against more types of pneumococcal bacteria than the previous adult vaccine and is now the funded vaccine for eligible adults under the program.
The vaccine is Government-funded under the National Immunisation Program for:
Adults aged 65 years and over
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 25 years and over
Adults aged 18 years and over with certain specified medical risk conditions.
Eligibility for people with a medical risk condition depends on the particular condition. People who have previously received a pneumococcal vaccine may still be eligible for Capvaxive. The recommended vaccine and timing will depend on their age, medical conditions and vaccination history. Please speak with your GP to check your eligibility.
We are currently running vaccine clinics but have been advised of supply limitations affecting the rollout of the new vaccine. Appointments will depend on the stock we receive, and some eligible patients may need to wait for further supplies. We apologise for any inconvenience.
