What is GLA:D®?

GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoArthritis: Denmark) is an evidence-based education and exercise program developed in Denmark and now delivered worldwide. It is designed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Research shows that completing the program can:

  • Help reduce pain

  • Improve strength and mobility

  • Support confidence in managing daily activities

What’s involved?

Led by Tom Beck, a physiotherapist trained in the GLA:D® method, the program runs over 6 weeks and includes:

  • 2 Education Sessions

    • Session 1 is free – introduction to osteoarthritis, pain, and safe movement.

    • Session 2 – delivered alongside your first exercise class.

  • 12 Supervised Exercise Sessions

    • Two individual sessions per week.

    • Exercises are tailored to your ability and progressed gradually.

  • Baseline and Follow-up Testing

    • Simple measurements taken at the beginning and end to track progress.

  • Home Exercises

    • Straightforward activities to continue between sessions.

Who can take part?

  • Adults with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms (an X-ray is not required).

  • People experiencing joint pain, stiffness, or reduced movement.

  • If you are unsure, speak with your GP or arrange an assessment with Tom.

Costs & Funding Options

  • First education session is free.

  • $70 per exercise session, or $780 upfront (equivalent to $65 per session).

  • Private health insurance (extras) may provide a rebate.

  • Medicare Chronic Condition Management Plans (CCMP):

    • If your GP provides a CCMP, you may be able to claim a rebate for up to 5 sessions per calendar year.

    • Any remaining sessions are paid via private health insurance or privately.

Do I need a GP referral?

  • A referral is not required.

  • It is recommended that you discuss the program with your GP to ensure it is appropriate for you and to check whether you may be eligible for Medicare funding under a Chronic Condition Management Plan.

What to expect each week

  • Two supervised exercise sessions per week for 6 weeks.

  • Each session lasts around 45 minutes.

  • You will be supported to gradually increase your exercise level in a safe and structured way.

  • A follow-up appointment is scheduled 3 months after starting the program, where you will repeat simple physical tests to review your progress and measure improvements.

Evidence & Research

GLA:D® is supported by international research and clinical guidelines for managing hip and knee osteoarthritis.

  • Studies have shown that the program can reduce pain and improve daily function.

  • For some people, these improvements may delay or reduce the need to consider surgery.

  • Surgery may still be required for others, depending on individual circumstances.
